So, um,  also, um, I'm one of five kids. Uh, my twin sister 0:00:58.480,0:01:05.120 had a severe learning disability as an adult was  diagnosed bipolar. She's our angel in heaven now. 0:01:05.120,0:01:10.160 Um, my middle brother, Grant, that that you'll see  on the picture there, he's the only fiery redhead 0:01:10.160,0:01:15.760 of us and the only one that doesn't have a twin.  He didn't need we did not need another redhead. 0:01:15.760,0:01:22.080 I'm just going to tell y'all that. Um, so Grant  has cable pausy and uses a power wheelchair and 0:01:22.080,0:01:28.000 He is legally blind, but he can see some things,  just not what I need him to see. So,  the youngest set of twins, my brother uh has ADHD, 0:01:34.160,0:01:42.080 and all three had IEPs throughout school. I am  OCD to the max. Mom would always say, "We don't 0:01:42.080,0:01:48.720 need a doctor to tell us, Rhonda." So, um, you  know, we are helping one another just like when 0:01:48.720,0:01:54.400 when you were sharing about I don't have all the  answers, but I'm going to work to find it for you. 0:01:54.400,0:02:01.600 Right. That's what we do. And this is through peer  support. Um, just to kind of go over a little bit 0:02:01.600,0:02:07.360 about what all we do, we are the parent training  and information project for the state of Kentucky. 0:02:07.360,0:02:14.480 So, how many of y'all do your kids have IEPs  right now? Okay. So under the Individuals with 0:02:14.480,0:02:21.760 Disabilities Education Act or IDEA, that is what  calls for the IEP in school, we're funded out of 0:02:21.760,0:02:27.760 that same federal law. There's at least one parent  training and information center in every state. 0:02:27.760,0:02:33.680 Now, some states like Florida and California, they  have more than one just because of population, but 0:02:33.680,0:02:43.360 we have been uh Kucky's since uh first received  one back in 88. and fingers and toes crossed. No, 0:02:43.360,0:02:48.320 the funding is supposed to still be there come  October one with everything that's gone on. So, 0:02:48.320,0:02:53.920 a lot of what we've been doing is with everything  people's been hearing from the federal level, 0:02:53.920,0:03:00.480 um they are believing that this is going to go  away, that my child is going to lose their IEP if 0:03:00.480,0:03:06.800 the US Department of Education goes away. That's  not true because no matter what it's under, it's 0:03:06.800,0:03:13.040 a federal law. The federal law did not change.  So, there's a lot of misconceptions out there 0:03:13.040,0:03:19.920 um and a lot of programs that are offered, but  luckily the PTIs haven't been touched yet. So, 0:03:19.920,0:03:26.560 and we hope that they don't, but just know that  your child um if they have an IEP, the federal law 0:03:26.560,0:03:32.080 hasn't changed. So, that won't go away. However,  it is brought down from the federal level. So, 0:03:32.080,0:03:38.480 I always like to take a moment just to clarify  that. So what we do is through peer support. We 0:03:38.480,0:03:45.520 will help oneon-one stepping through the process  preparing for an ARC meeting. We the big thing is 0:03:45.520,0:03:53.200 we do not represent families in IEP meetings.  We are not advocates to individually represent 0:03:53.200,0:03:59.920 you. But what we can do is through peer support  step through the process. Sometimes if you have 0:03:59.920,0:04:05.680 a conversation or you go to a meeting, first  of all it's overwhelming, right? No matter how 0:04:05.680,0:04:11.760 kind everybody is to you and helping to  explain everything. This is our babies, 0:04:11.760,0:04:18.880 right? Um and it could be very overwhelming. So,  we can help kind of step through that. And you all 0:04:18.880,0:04:25.600 are very fortunate here with ODM County because I  can tell you the things that they do here, you're 0:04:25.600,0:04:32.160 not going to find other places. We serve the whole  state. Um, so the fact that working together and 0:04:32.160,0:04:38.560 that you met with a family prior to going into an  IEP meeting just to plan together to come up with 0:04:38.560,0:04:46.880 that draft, that's unheard of. Um, and so really  looking at how we partner together, how we build 0:04:46.880,0:04:52.160 that partnership. We offer trainings uh that  are all of our I should have started with this 0:04:52.160,0:04:57.680 first. All of our services are free. No matter  if you are a parent, a family member, individual 0:04:57.680,0:05:04.240 with a disability, a educator or provider, it is  covered through our grants. So that one-on-one 0:05:04.240,0:05:11.840 consultation working through different things.  Also, uh some of like what a lot we do is helping 0:05:11.840,0:05:20.160 to know about what community resources exist that  you can access. Um because each system and you 0:05:20.160,0:05:26.240 use the perfect example uh Bethany about you don't  know how to ask the certain way, right? You could 0:05:26.240,0:05:32.000 be saying it but you don't know what you don't  know. Do you know it? Right. Um and so we can 0:05:32.000,0:05:38.320 kind of help step through that. Um, a lot of times  people run into barriers locally with providers 0:05:38.320,0:05:45.760 or accessing services not because the people  intentionally are trying to in most part tell 0:05:45.760,0:05:53.520 you wrong. They do not have enough understanding  of their own system. Um, and everybody is so short 0:05:53.520,0:05:59.760 staffed throughout everything, especially in the  disability field. Um, and so we can kind of help 0:05:59.760,0:06:04.960 navigate that and help you with it. And if we're  not the right people just to to connect you with 0:06:04.960,0:06:12.240 who is now a lot um you know our whole thing is  to empower one another. And prioritize is because 0:08:12.720,0:08:18.560 it's what's been requested. So we did that and just to release that 0:09:02.480,0:09:10.480 for the Kentucky Early Intervention System  school age support. Like could I just have a 504 plan and not  an IEP? But I wouldn't go that route. But but you 0:20:43.200,0:20:48.400 could. My daughter doesn't need an Oh, okay. So  yes, she could just have a 50. Okay. I'm sorry. 0:20:48.400,0:20:55.440 I was not f I thought you were wanting to give  up the IEP to go to 504. No. Yeah. So, um, so 0:20:55.440,0:21:00.800 with the section 504, and just a total side note,  if your child has an IEP, they're automatically 0:21:00.800,0:21:08.080 qualify under the definitions under for section  504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which is a civil 0:21:08.080,0:21:13.760 rights law. It's not a specific education law like  IDEA, the Individuals of Disabilities Education 0:21:13.760,0:21:20.640 Act that calls for the IEP. But what that does  is that could help with some accommodations 0:21:20.640,0:21:28.560 uh in the classroom. Uh you're going to have a  lot more people um that qualify under 504 than 0:21:28.560,0:21:34.160 uh for an IEP under IDEA because of the  definition. So if you bring out the IEP 0:21:34.160,0:21:43.920 infographic and the section 504, section 504 the  definition of disability is um is that it limits 0:21:43.920,0:21:50.240 one major life activity that could be breathing,  walking, socially uh emotional, mental health if 0:21:50.240,0:21:56.960 it's affecting one major life activity. Now I if  you feel that they need to be evaluated for that, 0:21:56.960,0:22:01.040 I would send that referral in to get that.  Now, the other thing that you're bringing up 0:22:01.040,0:22:07.840 is specifically because of absences and because of  medical. So, it may not be that you necessarily, 0:22:07.840,0:22:12.240 it probably would be a good idea if you  were qualified to get the 504 plan in place, 0:22:12.240,0:22:18.160 but it is it because of the medical condition  and there is something called home hospital 0:22:18.160,0:22:24.960 um instruction that medically she cannot attend  school. Right. So, it really gets usually just 0:22:24.960,0:22:30.400 like an illness or a doctor's appointment like  more doctor's appointments than the typical like 0:22:30.400,0:22:36.240 once a year well visit. Well, and that would be  really working with ODM county and and finding 0:22:36.240,0:22:40.800 out because each district because I think she has  one but we keep getting like we've gotten like 0:22:40.800,0:22:47.840 the truth is like don't policy. Yeah. So based  on policy the way that we work with that is we 0:22:47.840,0:22:52.720 do have some applications that can be filled out  with the doctor for extended doctor's notes and 0:22:52.720,0:22:57.440 also extended parent notes. Yes. that I have that  and I still keep getting these truency letters and 0:22:57.440,0:23:02.240 it's frustrating because like why did I have my  doctor fill this out? That's why I was like does 0:23:02.240,0:23:08.960 this notable error so just send me an email so  that I have your student's name and then that 0:23:08.960,0:23:16.880 way I can send it to personel. And I thought  in her 504 plan um part of her disability is 0:23:16.880,0:23:23.200 um tummy issues. just say um and teachers had  refused her from going to the bathroom. Like, 0:23:23.200,0:23:26.960 you just came back from the bathroom. She's like,  "But I have a stomach ache." And they're like, 0:23:26.960,0:23:31.600 "But you just came back." And she's just like,  she's like, "Mom, I almost had a like bad 0:23:31.600,0:23:35.840 situation." I'm like, "Okay, but I called and they  just keep saying like the secretary just keeps 0:23:35.840,0:23:41.360 saying like, "Okay." And then nothing. Send me an  Send me an email and say, "I spoke to you at the 0:23:41.360,0:23:48.720 workshop and I'll I'll know what you're talking  you'll try to do what I need to do. So, just 0:23:48.720,0:23:53.040 having your students see, I'll be able to figure  out like the school and who I need to talk to and 0:23:53.040,0:23:58.320 who I need to explain things to. Okay. Okay. And  see, that's the great thing about here. And one of 0:23:58.320,0:24:05.440 the first things that like one of the in Oh, they  got it working. Infographic. It's magic. And a lot of it is just  explaining those things and and sometimes people 0:25:25.600,0:25:34.400 don't understand completely the full scope of the  child's IEP or 504 plan. Um and everybody may not 0:25:35.120,0:25:41.280 have that if they're not directly working with  that child in part of that team, you know. So, 0:25:41.280,0:25:47.120 um but yeah, definitely and I mean you  have the right people here. Um and but 0:25:47.120,0:25:52.880 it in the work that they do is to help to  bring everybody together.
