This marks the last newsletter of the year, but we still have a lot to accomplish before we close the door on third grade for these enthusiastic students. We also have our Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland croquet games during the afternoon of Friday, May 29.
Thank you to all who have faithfully helped throughout the year to make this a successful endeavor for all of our third-grade students. Our classroom cannot run smoothly without you! We are looking for parent volunteers to help out with our Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland croquet game (it would be in the afternoon on My 29), as well as donations for our “tea party” following the game of croquet. Please contact your child’s homeroom teacher if you are able to help!
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has kept all of our attentions as Alice gets herself into the most ridiculous of circumstances and meets unusual characters. This month we will also be reading Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.
In science, we will start our unit entitled, "Life Cycles, Traits, and Variations." We will explore the life cycles of plants and animals. We will examine the traits of parents, offspring, and siblings. Moreover, we will look at how traits vary within a population and species and find how environment affects the traits of both plants and animals. Students will learn about helpful traits for survival in differing environments.
We will be moving onto our last unit of Important Rivers of the World. The students will discover how rivers have shaped the places and the way that people choose to live throughout history. The students will each do a poster report on a major world river.
In Reading Mastery 3 we will be finishing up reading in book C. We will continue working on mirroring the question and writing answers in complete sentences on the textbook questions. Please look closely at which questions should be in complete sentence The last two weeks of the school year we will be practicing the play at the end of our book. Please help your child with their part as we will be performing in our classroom and reading in front of the class. Students should still be reading 15 minutes per night.
As you are aware, we are reading some classical novels to complete the school year. Currently, we are reading The Railway Children. Be entranced with your child, as you listen to uncover the story.
Math facts are crucial to a solid math foundation. Along with the multiplication facts, students will need to continue practicing their division facts as well. We all want these third graders to be ready for fourth grade math!
The Saxon 5/4 students impress me with their work ethic. Students should be practicing their math facts a little each night. If you are looking for ways to assist your student at home with homework, checking that your child has a label along with the answer when necessary is a great way to help. Most homework points lost are due to missing labels.
Keep up the good work. Remember to make studying spelling words a nightly routine. The words are becoming more difficult, but the students are meeting the challenge.
Students will read the Spanish book Brandon Brown quiere un perro, which covers high frequency words in Spanish, information about pets around the world, and responsible decision making. There will be numerous optional classroom materials that are available online through Canvas (PDF of the book, our packet that goes along with the book, Quizlet practice link, and "audio book" readings of each chapter.)
