00;00;00;01 - 00;00;00;24 Hi everyone. 00;00;00;24 - 00;00;03;07 Welcome to Navigating the Digital Playground, 00;00;03;07 - 00;00;06;18 a new podcast from the Stevens Point Area Public School District. 00;00;06;25 - 00;00;09;08 I'm Sarah O'Donnell, director of communications, 00;00;09;08 - 00;00;11;00 and I'm really glad you're here. 00;00;11;00 - 00;00;14;26 This series is designed to continue a conversation that began last year 00;00;15;01 - 00;00;19;05 through our digital age sessions, really focusing on how technology shapes 00;00;19;05 - 00;00;21;28 students lives and how we can work together to help them 00;00;21;28 - 00;00;24;28 use it in healthy, positive and balanced ways. 00;00;25;01 - 00;00;29;28 welcome back to our next episode of Navigating the Digital Playground. 00;00;30;06 - 00;00;33;27 Today we are going to talk about creating healthy tech boundaries at home. 00;00;34;04 - 00;00;37;29 And we have with us Doctor Brian Casey, our director of technology. 00;00;38;03 - 00;00;41;14 Who is going to chat with us about that today. 00;00;41;15 - 00;00;42;12 Welcome, Brian. 00;00;42;12 - 00;00;44;14 Thank you. Yeah. It's, nice to be here. 00;00;44;14 - 00;00;47;11 I love, talking about technology and kids. 00;00;47;11 - 00;00;49;26 That's why I got into this job. Perfect. 00;00;49;26 - 00;00;51;27 Can you give us a little bit of your background, Brian? 00;00;51;27 - 00;00;53;23 How long you've been with the district? Yeah. 00;00;53;23 - 00;00;57;03 I I it's my 13th year in the district. 00;00;57;07 - 00;00;59;18 In this role. 00;00;59;18 - 00;01;04;13 Prior to that, I was a technology coach, teacher that helped with technology. 00;01;05;02 - 00;01;06;25 And I was a teacher for a good number of years. 00;01;06;25 - 00;01;08;22 So I have that background, too. 00;01;08;22 - 00;01;10;16 And I'm also a parent. 00;01;10;16 - 00;01;12;02 I do have three children 00;01;12;02 - 00;01;15;02 who went through the Stevens Point Area public school District, 00;01;15;02 - 00;01;18;03 so I'm very familiar with how we do things here. 00;01;18;03 - 00;01;24;11 And, and, over the course of my career, I've been very, collaborative, with 00;01;24;11 - 00;01;27;10 other colleagues and other professionals that, 00;01;27;12 - 00;01;29;23 really have the focus on 00;01;29;23 - 00;01;34;02 how do we use technology in teaching and, and beyond that, 00;01;34;02 - 00;01;37;21 also, kids, what are they using? 00;01;37;24 - 00;01;39;28 What impacts them? 00;01;39;28 - 00;01;41;05 How do we keep them safe? 00;01;41;05 - 00;01;45;01 It's also been a primary focus of my my work over the last decade. 00;01;45;01 - 00;01;47;18 Really? Yeah, absolutely. 00;01;47;18 - 00;01;51;25 Brian, what are you hearing from families about technology use at home right now, 00;01;51;25 - 00;01;55;02 or what's coming into our classrooms that we're seeing? 00;01;55;15 - 00;01;58;22 it's pretty clear that that, you know, kids that are growing up 00;01;58;22 - 00;02;00;17 now are growing up digital. 00;02;00;17 - 00;02;01;26 We've known that for a while. 00;02;01;26 - 00;02;03;08 I mean, that's been a fact. 00;02;03;08 - 00;02;06;08 For over a decade. It's not anything new. 00;02;06;19 - 00;02;10;02 Some of the technology that they're using changes, 00;02;10;02 - 00;02;13;29 you know, currently, there's a lot of, TikTok is a big thing. 00;02;14;12 - 00;02;16;06 Those types of platforms that change. 00;02;16;06 - 00;02;20;15 But really, the the idea behind it is pretty much the same. 00;02;20;15 - 00;02;21;19 Before that it was YouTube. 00;02;21;19 - 00;02;26;08 Now it's TikTok, but it's just the idea that kids are exposed to ideas and people, 00;02;26;20 - 00;02;31;14 well beyond their own home, their own community, internationally. 00;02;31;21 - 00;02;36;02 that allows them to learn about new things and expand their world, 00;02;36;02 - 00;02;40;17 but it also exposes them to a certain amount of risk that, we want to make sure 00;02;40;17 - 00;02;44;27 that they're aware of and their parents are aware of as well, too, 00;02;44;27 - 00;02;48;27 with the idea that technology itself isn't necessarily bad or evil. 00;02;48;27 - 00;02;52;13 That there's, there's risks that comes with it, but it can be used for 00;02;52;13 - 00;02;55;13 something many things that that are very, very positive. 00;02;55;21 - 00;02;58;07 And really, it's a fact of life, growing up. 00;02;58;07 - 00;02;58;28 Yeah. 00;02;58;28 - 00;03;02;00 If you're if you're a student, you need it 00;03;02;00 - 00;03;05;00 to succeed in school, but then it's also part of your social life. 00;03;05;12 - 00;03;08;06 It's probably going to be part of your career moving up. 00;03;08;06 - 00;03;11;21 The latest thing has been AI, which I don't think 00;03;11;21 - 00;03;14;17 has quite really hit home with students so much yet 00;03;14;17 - 00;03;16;27 they're I think they're just starting to learn about it. 00;03;16;27 - 00;03;20;23 It's more of a thing for adults, but we're starting to see more and more kids 00;03;21;08 - 00;03;23;24 tip their toes into the water and kind of experiment 00;03;23;24 - 00;03;25;27 within the guidelines that we've provided. 00;03;25;27 - 00;03;27;24 For sure. Sure. 00;03;27;24 - 00;03;31;03 Brian, we're really lucky here to have our 1 to 1 program 00;03;31;03 - 00;03;33;04 for students to have Chromebooks. 00;03;33;04 - 00;03;36;29 Can you just walk us through kind of some of those safety parameters 00;03;36;29 - 00;03;38;04 that are in place, 00;03;38;04 - 00;03;41;26 that comes with those Chromebooks while they're using them 00;03;41;26 - 00;03;43;16 in our, in our district? Yeah. 00;03;43;16 - 00;03;46;16 So I mean, the number one goal is that knowing that we have to use 00;03;46;16 - 00;03;51;02 a lot of technology in education, whether that's, you know, assessments 00;03;51;02 - 00;03;54;11 or access to curriculum or anything else. 00;03;55;01 - 00;03;58;18 We wanted to make sure that every kid starts at a level platform 00;03;58;18 - 00;04;03;07 so that they have a device that does what they need, and it works reliably. 00;04;03;07 - 00;04;07;08 So that's why we use Chromebooks that are it's a very good universal device. 00;04;08;11 - 00;04;11;14 The fact that we give a device to students, 00;04;11;14 - 00;04;13;04 and they're allowed to take them home 00;04;13;04 - 00;04;16;04 and use them for homework and research and other things. 00;04;16;11 - 00;04;19;11 Also, some independent use within our guidelines, 00;04;19;19 - 00;04;21;05 we have to make sure that they're safe. 00;04;21;05 - 00;04;25;11 So, the Chromebooks that we issue are pretty well locked down. 00;04;25;25 - 00;04;29;09 It's not the same as a Chromebook you'd buy from Walmart or Best Buy. 00;04;29;18 - 00;04;33;10 We have configured those to restrict many, many things that, 00;04;33;26 - 00;04;36;19 would allow them to have more control over what they do. 00;04;36;19 - 00;04;37;27 And where they go. 00;04;37;27 - 00;04;39;25 So the device is locked down. 00;04;39;25 - 00;04;42;26 The second thing that we do is that we do monitor their accounts. 00;04;43;04 - 00;04;46;28 They are provided email, to use for academic purposes. 00;04;46;28 - 00;04;51;00 And secondary students are allowed to use the email beyond the school, 00;04;51;15 - 00;04;54;28 and that is to allow them to contact people 00;04;54;28 - 00;04;58;04 that they may need for a research project or, 00;04;58;20 - 00;05;02;04 especially when they get into high school colleges, universities. 00;05;02;04 - 00;05;03;25 Yeah, employers. 00;05;03;25 - 00;05;05;07 So that there is a reason for that. 00;05;05;07 - 00;05;08;19 But due to that fact that we give them a device, we give them 00;05;08;19 - 00;05;11;24 internet access, we have to provide security. 00;05;12;16 - 00;05;15;16 We use a filtering mechanism called securely. 00;05;15;17 - 00;05;17;24 And that's a vendor that we employ. 00;05;17;24 - 00;05;20;24 It provides filtering for access to the internet. 00;05;20;24 - 00;05;24;10 So if they try to go to sites that we've deemed unsafe, they're blocked. 00;05;25;00 - 00;05;27;15 It also monitors their use of email. 00;05;27;15 - 00;05;31;02 Their use of, Google Drive, which is where they store pictures and, 00;05;31;12 - 00;05;32;23 and documents of their 00;05;32;23 - 00;05;36;10 creating a writing project, or they've stored pictures in their drive. 00;05;36;20 - 00;05;39;15 We will monitor those to make sure nothing inappropriate 00;05;39;15 - 00;05;41;10 is showing up in their drive. Okay. 00;05;41;10 - 00;05;45;06 So it we are watching, to the best of our ability. 00;05;45;10 - 00;05;49;13 I would say it's been a very reliable, good service to use. 00;05;49;14 - 00;05;53;03 We we do get alerts on students for unsafe behavior. 00;05;53;17 - 00;05;57;07 And when those alerts happen, school officials are notified, 00;05;57;07 - 00;06;01;01 and then they can take action and intervene when required. 00;06;01;03 - 00;06;01;25 Sure. 00;06;01;25 - 00;06;04;14 That that's something that we do for parents to, 00;06;04;14 - 00;06;07;14 to, I would say to ensure that the device is safe. 00;06;07;14 - 00;06;11;11 But the other thing I'd like to say is, like when students are using the internet 00;06;12;06 - 00;06;15;29 or any device, whether it's something they use at home or our device, 00;06;16;05 - 00;06;17;16 nothing is 100%. 00;06;17;16 - 00;06;20;16 There is no filter that works to 100% efficacy. 00;06;21;06 - 00;06;24;11 And even if it's a service, a parents are using something like bark 00;06;24;11 - 00;06;28;11 or whatever at home, they shouldn't think that it's, you know, I got this set up. 00;06;28;11 - 00;06;31;07 I never have to be involved in my child's life right? Right. 00;06;31;07 - 00;06;35;07 We always emphasize that that there is no substitute for parental involvement 00;06;35;07 - 00;06;38;04 or parental supervision when they're using technology. 00;06;38;04 - 00;06;42;11 But for the devices that we send home, that's probably the best that they could 00;06;42;11 - 00;06;45;16 do. It's probably way better than what most parents would set up themselves. 00;06;45;17 - 00;06;47;00 Sure, sure. 00;06;47;00 - 00;06;49;29 Brian, is there anything additional that parents can do? 00;06;49;29 - 00;06;54;01 With that securely on that Chromebook to help kind of when they're, 00;06;54;07 - 00;06;56;00 you know, when they're on our internet? 00;06;56;00 - 00;06;59;19 My understanding is it's got like one set of rules, but maybe at home, 00;06;59;22 - 00;07;02;02 the Chromebook may act a little bit differently. 00;07;02;02 - 00;07;04;08 No, security is universal. 00;07;04;08 - 00;07;06;19 Okay. There. On there, that filtering is always. 00;07;06;19 - 00;07;11;19 And, I know, in effect, when they're on our network, 00;07;11;19 - 00;07;15;12 we also have a firewall, but that applies to all devices, whether they're 00;07;15;12 - 00;07;19;10 trying to access our internet or our Wi-Fi with their own device, 00;07;19;27 - 00;07;22;16 whether they're logging into a lab computer, 00;07;22;16 - 00;07;25;25 whatever it is, the firewalls they're doing that work okay. 00;07;26;01 - 00;07;30;12 The security works 24/7 on the Chromebooks, but only the Chromebooks, 00;07;30;12 - 00;07;33;18 only we don't have it on lab computers or obviously 00;07;33;18 - 00;07;36;17 we don't have it on their phones. Sure, sure. 00;07;36;17 - 00;07;38;07 At the times when they're allowed to use a phone 00;07;38;07 - 00;07;41;07 and they access our Wi-Fi, they will hit the firewall, sure, 00;07;41;08 - 00;07;45;24 but we also offer parents access to securely family. 00;07;45;24 - 00;07;48;14 It's called securely parent access. 00;07;48;14 - 00;07;51;13 And what that allows them to do is actually get a detailed 00;07;51;18 - 00;07;54;14 monitoring of what their child is doing. 00;07;54;14 - 00;07;57;11 They can see what sites they visited. 00;07;57;11 - 00;07;59;04 What's been blocked. 00;07;59;04 - 00;08;02;13 They do have some more control over the device at home. 00;08;02;13 - 00;08;05;01 For example, they can turn off the internet 00;08;05;01 - 00;08;07;06 if they don't, that they feel that, 00;08;07;06 - 00;08;09;26 you know, the child is using the Chromebook too much 00;08;09;26 - 00;08;11;27 or they're done with their homework or they're 00;08;11;27 - 00;08;15;08 they can literally go on the app on their phone and say, turn off internet. 00;08;15;16 - 00;08;19;15 It's sort of like a built in screen time for that Chromebook if they wanted, if. 00;08;19;15 - 00;08;20;12 They want to use that. 00;08;20;12 - 00;08;23;19 And we, it's not set up automatically. 00;08;23;19 - 00;08;25;19 They have to, contact us. 00;08;25;19 - 00;08;30;00 It the instructions are on the web page, and then we provide that access for them. 00;08;30;00 - 00;08;33;11 So I think for those parents that want that extra level of involvement, 00;08;33;22 - 00;08;35;11 we do provide it. 00;08;35;11 - 00;08;40;02 And it's also important to note that that only works after school hours. 00;08;40;02 - 00;08;41;29 It's not set up to work during school. 00;08;41;29 - 00;08;44;23 And what we tell parents is while they're at school, we have a firewall. 00;08;44;23 - 00;08;49;02 We have securely we're monitoring, we got that when they're at school. 00;08;49;12 - 00;08;53;10 The minute they leave campus after hours, they have the ability 00;08;53;10 - 00;08;56;10 to restrict or do other things with the Chromebook. 00;08;56;12 - 00;08;58;14 So that makes sense. Yeah, But I'm thinking of right. 00;08;58;14 - 00;09;00;27 We've got Chromebooks to kind of talk through that. 00;09;00;27 - 00;09;03;11 Students a lot of students have phones, right. 00;09;03;11 - 00;09;06;17 And that's a lot of where they are accessing just information. 00;09;07;01 - 00;09;09;19 you make any recommendations for maybe 00;09;09;19 - 00;09;12;19 some different types of monitoring? 00;09;13;07 - 00;09;15;28 I don't know if we call it software or monitoring apps, 00;09;15;28 - 00;09;19;25 that families can use to kind of have that conversation with their kids 00;09;19;25 - 00;09;21;23 or put some safety guardrails up. 00;09;21;23 - 00;09;22;19 Right. 00;09;22;19 - 00;09;25;15 Well, I think the most important thing to do 00;09;25;15 - 00;09;28;12 is to have the conversations with with the kids. 00;09;28;12 - 00;09;30;09 And it seems like, well, that's a no brainer. 00;09;30;09 - 00;09;34;08 But you don't want to just install some software, never sit down 00;09;34;08 - 00;09;37;29 and talk to your children about why and what's going on. 00;09;38;01 - 00;09;39;24 There is real danger. 00;09;39;24 - 00;09;41;29 That kids are exposed to. 00;09;41;29 - 00;09;45;00 And it's not just, you know, you know, I got hacked or, 00;09;45;00 - 00;09;48;13 you know, I went to a website that I wasn't supposed to go to. 00;09;48;13 - 00;09;52;18 They're literally professional criminals that target kids. 00;09;53;08 - 00;09;55;20 If I was in, my kids were going up. 00;09;55;20 - 00;09;59;02 Now, I would be sitting down and having the conversation about sextortion. 00;09;59;15 - 00;10;02;17 That's not a topic a lot of parents want to talk about, 00;10;03;01 - 00;10;06;15 but they have to understand there are professional gangs that, 00;10;06;15 - 00;10;10;23 that are organized, organized criminals that are worldwide, 00;10;11;05 - 00;10;14;29 that are targeting kids and they the kids need to know that that. 00;10;15;00 - 00;10;18;12 Yeah, you know, it's all great that you want to interact 00;10;18;12 - 00;10;22;00 with people, maybe go on social media, whatever it is. 00;10;22;00 - 00;10;25;11 Roblox or Tik Tok or any of those types of things. But 00;10;26;11 - 00;10;29;00 here's what you should do when, when this happens. 00;10;29;00 - 00;10;31;16 And this is okay. And this is not okay. 00;10;31;16 - 00;10;34;22 I think that's incumbent upon parents to sit down and say, look, 00;10;35;01 - 00;10;38;01 you know, we're giving you advice, but here's the expectation. 00;10;38;09 - 00;10;41;08 We want to keep you safe. And this is real. 00;10;41;08 - 00;10;45;05 This happens that people may come and, 00;10;45;13 - 00;10;49;11 approach you online and try and, try and recruit you 00;10;49;11 - 00;10;52;20 for really bad things or try and steal information from you. 00;10;53;03 - 00;10;55;21 I kind of think when I was growing up, we didn't have phones. 00;10;55;21 - 00;10;57;05 I'm dating myself there. 00;10;57;05 - 00;11;00;26 But, you see, I'm, you know, we did not have the internet. 00;11;00;26 - 00;11;03;21 And they taught us about stranger danger. 00;11;03;21 - 00;11;04;23 Sure, sure. 00;11;04;23 - 00;11;06;25 You know, and it was it really sunk in. 00;11;06;25 - 00;11;08;17 I was like, look, these were don't 00;11;08;17 - 00;11;12;09 comes up to you and just wants to talk to, you know, here's what you do. Yep. 00;11;12;14 - 00;11;14;23 I think parents need to do that with their kids. 00;11;14;23 - 00;11;18;16 It's like, besides, you're saying, well, that phones are bad, the internet is bad. 00;11;18;17 - 00;11;20;22 Just don't use it or I'm going to block everything. 00;11;20;22 - 00;11;22;09 That's a failing strategy. 00;11;22;09 - 00;11;23;16 I think the better strategy 00;11;23;16 - 00;11;26;29 is to try and educate them about the dangers and try and teach them 00;11;26;29 - 00;11;31;06 what's what, what's real and what what, they could face. 00;11;31;06 - 00;11;31;29 And also 00;11;32;29 - 00;11;33;18 what would be 00;11;33;18 - 00;11;36;19 an appropriate or when, when would you want to ask for help? 00;11;36;19 - 00;11;38;18 And it's it's okay to ask for help. 00;11;38;18 - 00;11;41;24 You know, I think they're shamed into being silent a lot of times, too, 00;11;41;24 - 00;11;45;22 because they went to inappropriate website and they don't want to get in trouble. 00;11;45;22 - 00;11;48;18 Right? It's not about that. It's about keeping us safe. 00;11;48;18 - 00;11;53;14 So, I that's one tip I would definitely give to parents. 00;11;53;14 - 00;11;54;29 Have the conversation. 00;11;54;29 - 00;11;57;27 That's a good take away of really talking through that. 00;11;57;27 - 00;11;59;14 When is it time to get help, right? 00;11;59;14 - 00;12;03;04 Like, when is it time to have an adult come into that conversation? 00;12;03;04 - 00;12;03;25 I really like that. 00;12;03;25 - 00;12;04;22 Well, and I think also 00;12;04;22 - 00;12;09;06 some parents are intimidated, you know, they don't, depending on their age or, 00;12;09;17 - 00;12;12;29 kids are, very inquisitive and they learn things very fast 00;12;12;29 - 00;12;16;01 and they're also uninhibited a lot of times by 00;12;17;08 - 00;12;18;29 the idea of risk or danger. 00;12;18;29 - 00;12;20;18 Right. And they'll just do things. 00;12;20;18 - 00;12;24;01 And there may be things that adults aren't sure about. 00;12;24;01 - 00;12;25;05 Yeah. They're like, what is this? 00;12;25;05 - 00;12;28;21 We'll have the conversation and find out, you know, where they're going. 00;12;28;21 - 00;12;32;29 What what social media platforms are they and how are they interacting with 00;12;32;29 - 00;12;33;17 other people? 00;12;33;17 - 00;12;35;20 What games are they playing online? 00;12;35;20 - 00;12;37;02 And, and learn more about it. 00;12;37;02 - 00;12;39;05 And don't be, you know, intimidated to the point where if 00;12;39;05 - 00;12;41;11 if I don't know what it is, it's automatically bad. 00;12;41;11 - 00;12;43;09 But, that's a good place to start. 00;12;43;09 - 00;12;46;24 Yeah, I can think of back when my kids wanted to be on Snapchat. 00;12;46;26 - 00;12;48;10 Yeah. I'll date myself. 00;12;48;10 - 00;12;50;08 I didn't have Snapchat when they were on there 00;12;50;08 - 00;12;54;03 and felt like I needed to learn how to do it, so me and a mom friend, 00;12;54;03 - 00;12;56;09 we both downloaded it, and we Snapchat each other 00;12;56;09 - 00;12;58;27 until we figured it out because, we felt really, 00;12;58;27 - 00;13;01;29 kind of silly not knowing how to use it in our kids were using it, but. 00;13;01;29 - 00;13;02;17 Well, yeah. 00;13;02;17 - 00;13;05;28 My wife found out that you could actually track kids on Snapchat 00;13;06;00 - 00;13;11;19 and actually use that as a primitive geo monitoring method for a. 00;13;12;02 - 00;13;12;27 Map. Right? 00;13;12;27 - 00;13;14;14 The snap map, 00;13;14;14 - 00;13;17;22 that's an example where we actually worked to the benefit, you know, 00;13;17;22 - 00;13;21;02 and then that also gave her a chance to see what it was about. 00;13;21;02 - 00;13;24;14 Yeah, maybe even, you know, see what they were doing online, 00;13;24;14 - 00;13;28;23 not trying to necessarily spy on them so much, but also, you know, be a. 00;13;28;23 - 00;13;31;05 Part of of what they're, what they're engaging. 00;13;31;05 - 00;13;35;07 And, Brian, do you think I know we have some digital curriculum or digital? 00;13;35;28 - 00;13;37;00 I'm not saying that. Right. 00;13;37;00 - 00;13;38;02 Digital citizenship. 00;13;38;02 - 00;13;38;12 Thank you. 00;13;38;12 - 00;13;41;15 What it's called, basically, yeah. 00;13;41;15 - 00;13;45;16 It's our way of trying to teach kids 00;13;45;16 - 00;13;49;02 about being safe online and what's appropriate. 00;13;49;02 - 00;13;50;23 What's what's not appropriate. 00;13;50;23 - 00;13;54;19 And, it it's very important because it also extends 00;13;54;26 - 00;13;58;00 to their lives with the phones beyond what we do in the school district. 00;13;58;12 - 00;14;00;11 Right. Because we do talk about social media. 00;14;00;11 - 00;14;01;22 We do talk about texting. 00;14;01;22 - 00;14;05;02 We do talk about things that we don't necessarily provide to them. 00;14;05;02 - 00;14;07;23 Sure. We don't pretend that those things don't exist. 00;14;07;23 - 00;14;08;25 They're real. 00;14;08;25 - 00;14;13;00 And, you know, they really need to hear it from multiple sources. 00;14;13;02 - 00;14;14;23 They need to hear it from trusted adults. 00;14;14;23 - 00;14;18;23 They need to hear from a teacher that they trust, their friends, hopefully. 00;14;19;18 - 00;14;21;13 But also their parents. Yeah. 00;14;21;13 - 00;14;26;00 That it's the idea that, you know, whatever you do right now online, 00;14;26;00 - 00;14;29;03 I think kids have stuff to understand that's going to follow them. 00;14;29;28 - 00;14;33;20 That's one of the big messages is that, they're going to make mistakes. 00;14;33;25 - 00;14;35;15 But hopefully 00;14;35;15 - 00;14;39;04 they have enough people around them to support them and that can help them. 00;14;39;23 - 00;14;42;27 But also think twice before you do something, create it. 00;14;43;02 - 00;14;43;14 Yeah. 00;14;43;14 - 00;14;47;28 They create something or post something and, you know, it can lead down avenues 00;14;47;28 - 00;14;52;02 that aren't so good in terms of cyberbullying or like 00;14;52;02 - 00;14;56;06 I mentioned before, the sextortion thing or other things like that. 00;14;56;06 - 00;14;59;24 So the more we can talk about it and make them aware of like, well, 00;15;00;02 - 00;15;03;02 this is what normal is and this is what, 00;15;03;08 - 00;15;05;28 is questionable and and not good. 00;15;05;28 - 00;15;08;05 And please don't do this right. 00;15;08;05 - 00;15;11;17 Just like everything else, we try to educate them about drugs and alcohol and, 00;15;12;02 - 00;15;16;01 you know, no alcohol is is part of becoming an adult in this society. 00;15;16;01 - 00;15;18;18 And, it's not like we can teach them how to drink, 00;15;18;18 - 00;15;21;18 but we can teach them what the risks are about that obviously, 00;15;21;25 - 00;15;24;23 driving, you know, for example, he had a drive. 00;15;24;23 - 00;15;27;15 But how do we, you know, educate kids about being safe? 00;15;27;15 - 00;15;32;03 Their, I think the digital citizenship is acknowledging the fact that 00;15;32;23 - 00;15;37;23 what they do online is, is very consequential to them and their, 00;15;38;02 - 00;15;42;15 their mental health, their well-being, and sometimes their physical safety. 00;15;42;15 - 00;15;45;09 And we have to do something, to teach them about it. 00;15;45;09 - 00;15;46;08 Yeah. Yeah. 00;15;47;27 - 00;15;49;19 Brian, is there anything you want to share 00;15;49;19 - 00;15;53;11 that you thought I'd ask that I didn't didn't ask you about? No. 00;15;53;11 - 00;15;58;13 Like I say, I just, I, I always like it 00;15;58;13 - 00;16;02;03 when parents reach out and they want to, know more about what we're doing. 00;16;02;03 - 00;16;05;14 So I think this is a good thing to try and get the message out to parents. 00;16;05;14 - 00;16;09;10 And I think you mentioned it before, too, as parents kind of bond together 00;16;09;10 - 00;16;13;09 and, and find, you know, support from, you know, each other 00;16;13;09 - 00;16;16;20 and like, well, what is this Snapchat about or TikTok. 00;16;16;20 - 00;16;21;10 Is it really bad or what is what is the newest thing I should my kid be using? 00;16;21;10 - 00;16;25;10 I is it you know they're they're interacting with the chat bot. 00;16;25;10 - 00;16;26;17 Is that normal? 00;16;26;17 - 00;16;27;28 Those things are great. 00;16;27;28 - 00;16;29;21 There's a lot of good resources. 00;16;29;21 - 00;16;32;05 You know, we used, Common Sense Media. 00;16;32;05 - 00;16;35;01 There's still kind of the go to we recommend for parents. 00;16;35;01 - 00;16;36;28 Okay. More information. 00;16;36;28 - 00;16;38;20 And then, of course, they can also reach out to the school 00;16;38;20 - 00;16;42;28 district to, you know, parents ask us all the time about monitoring. 00;16;42;28 - 00;16;45;21 We can help with the monitoring in our device. 00;16;45;21 - 00;16;49;29 But I also let parents know that, it's more than just trying to find a service 00;16;49;29 - 00;16;51;16 that you think is going to block everything, 00;16;51;16 - 00;16;53;13 because if you have the mentality 00;16;53;13 - 00;16;57;05 that you're just going to try and block all the bad things 00;16;57;06 - 00;17;01;11 and constantly try and block things, they'll find a way around. 00;17;01;14 - 00;17;02;03 Yes, they. 00;17;02;03 - 00;17;06;00 Are very in and, ingenious. 00;17;06;00 - 00;17;07;05 I guess, when it comes to this. 00;17;07;05 - 00;17;11;08 And, the internet is a great way to spread ideas about how to defeat filtering. 00;17;11;08 - 00;17;15;06 So, you know, it's almost establishing that trust with the, 00;17;15;06 - 00;17;18;09 with the, with the child and understanding the parameters of, 00;17;18;11 - 00;17;21;20 you know, the limits of what we give you, this phone or this access. 00;17;21;26 - 00;17;23;09 Here's what we expect. 00;17;23;09 - 00;17;26;20 Here's what happens when it doesn't, knowing what the good options are. 00;17;26;20 - 00;17;28;25 If they do want to do some monitoring. 00;17;28;25 - 00;17;31;25 we don't recommend specifically 00;17;31;28 - 00;17;35;17 things for their private devices, but we can help. 00;17;35;24 - 00;17;36;23 Yeah, yeah. 00;17;36;23 - 00;17;38;11 And we can put some of those links, 00;17;38;11 - 00;17;41;05 in these show notes to, of just different options. 00;17;41;05 - 00;17;44;08 Maybe that are out there for, for families to, to review. 00;17;45;06 - 00;17;47;00 Well, Brian, thank you so much for joining us. 00;17;47;00 - 00;17;50;08 This was really enlightening and I just appreciate the opportunity 00;17;50;08 - 00;17;54;10 to have the conversation and what you have done to champion digital. 00;17;54;21 - 00;17;57;12 Safety and digital citizenship in our district. 00;17;57;12 - 00;18;00;25 And, and all the work that you and your team do to keep our kids safe online. 00;18;00;28 - 00;18;02;01 Thanks. Hey, I appreciate it. 00;18;02;01 - 00;18;03;28 Thanks for having me.
