Lakewood Middle
January 2026
Happy New Year! I hope all of our Mustang families had a relaxing holiday season with your loved ones.
A new semester brings new opportunities for our students to grow academically, connect socially, and
find success.
Looking Ahead: What's Happening in January?
Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 6. Quarter two report cards will be mailed home the week we
return. Please review them with your student and celebrate successes and help them set goals for the
second semester. You can keep up to date with grades at anytime by checking Skyward at home.
Students that didn't pass a core class in semester one will be contacted to schedule after-school credit
recovery.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Conferences will be held on February 4 and 5. We invite all of our parents and students to attend to
discuss your student's progress. A teacher on your students team will be in touch soon to schedule a
time.
Attendance Matters
I'd like to remind everyone about the importance of daily attendance. Students who are chronically
absent (miss more than 10% of school) miss the equivalent of a full years worth of instruction over the
course of their K-12 academic career. Chronic absenteeism, especially in early grades, is linked to a
higher risk of not graduating high school. Please reach out if you need assistance addressing barriers to
attendance or academic success.
Stay Connected
Communication is key. Please make sure your contact information is up-to-date in Skyward and reach out
to teachers, counselors, or administrators if there is something we can help your student with. I want to
thank all of our families for being a part of our school community. Together we can make semester two a
success for every student. I want to wish everyone a wonderful start to the new year!

The students in our hightest S.T.a.R. Achievement Club, the Mustang Club, enjoyed many perks
during the second semester. In addition to receiving a bundle of Lakewood merchandise (including
a t-shirt, sunglasses, and more), they also received special treats during lunch on Fridays, and were
invited to "leave their mark" on the school by creating personalized ceiling tiles. Here, students are
pictured working on those tiles.

S.T.a.R. Achievement Clubs
5
Lakewood's STaR Achievement Club was created to bring attention to and celebrate the
successes of our Mustang student body. Strong academic achievement, responsible and safe
behavior, and a conscious display of maturity exemplifies what makes a Lakewood Mustang.
The Basics To Know:
1. To be eligible for a club, your student has an entire quarter (first quarter, second quarter,
third quarter, and fourth quarter). The next quarter is when they receive their incentives.
2. Their eligibility for a club starts over every new quarter.
3. Fourth quarter data will still earn your student a club level but instead of receiving the
predetermined incentives, they will be entered in drawings for the end of the year incentives.
(Due to not seeing them in the summer.)
4. To be eligible for the Mustang or Silver Clubs, your student must participate in a civic activity.
Guidance has been provided to the students on how to record their civic activity and Mr.
Mettlen is available for help if there are any questions.
The overall program was discussed in Advisories at the beginning of the school year with fliers
sent home for parents/guardians. Ask your student about the program and take the
opportunity to set goals for the school year with them. If you have more questions, please feel
free to contact Mr. Mettlen through the school office.
Daily attendance is essential to help your child stay on
track and engaged in learning. Please send your child to
school each day they are feeling well enough to participate
in classroom activities. Many mild symptoms do not
require students to stay home. Children can still attend
school if they have:
- A mild cold (such as a runny nose or cough)
- A mild stomachache
- Watery eyes without fever, eye pain, or redness of the eyelids
- A mild rash with no other symptoms
- Have been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication
Unsure if your child should stay home? Additional illness guidelines are available on our
website at
As a reminder, please call your school office to notify them anytime your child will be absent.
Greatness grows when you?re here!
