Work Session Poland Board of Education held February 14, 2022 A Work Session of the Poland Board of Education was held on Monday, February 14, 2022, at 6:00 p.m., in the Dobbins Board Room, 3030 Dobbins Road. President, Mr. Polis called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Pledge of Allegiance Members present for roll call and answering their names were Ms. Colucci, Dr. Dinopoulos, Mr. Polis, Mrs. Elia, and Mr. Warren. - All Here. Transportation Coordinator – Megan Roemer • Megan Roemer explained we continue to navigate through the bus driver shortage and thanked everyone for their patience during this difficult time. • March 3, 2022 a Transportation Roundtable is being planned. The location is to be determined due to the number of district’s showing interest in participating. • The district still has several drivers out; however, hopeful to have a few released soon. • Anyone interested in becoming a bus driver should contact Megan Roemer for more information. Treasurer – Janet Muntean • Treasurer Muntean updated the Board on the Westminster Fund. Janet Muntean explained she was able to obtain a copy of the application dated 1996 to open the account. In the past, the fund had paid out scholarships to Poland graduates attending Westminster; however, no written criteria documentation can be located. Treasurer Muntean will speak to legal experts as to the board’s options for the remaining fund balance. More information to follow at a later date. Superintendent – Craig Hockenberry • Superintendent Hockenberry welcomed everyone in attendance and watching online. • Thanked all those who are involved in checking roads and assisting on inclement weather days. • Expressed that current PEA negotiations are going well. • Wished student athletes the best of luck this week. • Congratulated the 3rd grade teachers and students on released results of 3rd Grade Reading Guarantee. Poland scored highest in region. • Updated the Board that the substitute teacher pay rate through the MVRCOG/ESCEO is increasing to $110.00 per day. • Explained the Juneteenth is now a Federal Holiday and necessary resolutions will be forthcoming for employees impacted by this new Holiday. • Conferences on February 17th will be conducted in person. • February 18th – No school • February 21st – President’s Day – No School • February 22nd – 4th Staff Development (Waiver Day) • March 1st – Grade 11 – ACT Testing – Grades 9, 10 and 12 will be remote. • Kindergarten Registration is scheduled for March 5 and March 12 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Dobbins. We currently have approximately 140 kindergarten students this year and there are 170 kindergarten eligible within Poland school boundaries. • March 25th a Safety Compliance, Review and Training Day is being planned for staff. Safety Day is made possible through Grant opportunities. • Poland Seminary Sign options were presented and discussed. After discussion the board requested getting more designs and possibly asking students in art classes involved in a design. • Proposed Revision of the 2022-2023 District Calendar was discussed with the following being highlighted: - Worked with the PEA and strategically looked at Data to better impact instruction. - 910 hours are needed for grades K-6 through student days. - 1001 hours are needed for grades 7-12 through student days. - Proposing to frontload more professional development at the beginning of the school year. - Pattern of high staff and student absences during week of Thanksgiving. (950 student absences this year). - Same pattern at Christmas break – Having 2 or 3 student days this week is not beneficial; therefore, days over breaks have been spread out and incorporated in the calendar. - Proposed calendar was reviewed by the PEA. - Plenty of required student hours are built into the draft proposal. - Revised calendar will be approved at a future meeting. At 6:41 p.m., Ms. Colucci moved and Mr. Warren seconded with all members present signaling aye to enter into executive session to consider the sale of real or personal property by competitive bid, or the sale or disposition of unneeded, obsolete, or unfit property under R.C. 505.10, if disclosure of the information would result in a competitive advantage to the person whose personal, private interest is adverse to the general public interest. Reconvene to Work Session and Adjourn At 9:12 p.m., Ms. Colucci moved and Mr. Warren seconded with all members present voting aye to reconvene and adjourn the meeting. Motion passed 5-0.
