Work Session Poland Board of Education held September 17, 2018 

 

 

A work session of the Poland Board of Education was held on Monday, September 17, 2018 at 
6:00 p.m. at the Middle School/McKinley Connector 

 

President, Mrs. Zedaker called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. 

 

Pledge of Allegiance 

 

Members present for roll call and answering their names were Dr. Dinopoulos, Mr. Lavorini, Mr. 
Riddle and Mrs. Zedaker. Absent: Mr. Shovlin. 

 

DISCUSSION 

 

 Start of School Year – Superintendent Janofa shared how “excellent” the start of the 
2018/2019 school year was. Mr. David Purins and Mrs. Lisa Iberis highlighted on the 
following changes at the Middle School/McKinley site which reiterated Mr. Janofa’s 
comment on an excellent start. They include: 
- Master Schedule completely revamped to accommodate all grade levels. 
- Creating transitions from McKinley to Middle School as well as Middle School 
to High School 
- WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) – Welcoming letters 
- 8th Grade Electives 
- High School credits offered in Middle School 
- Literacy Coaches – Diagnostic testing, collecting of data for goals, 
benchmarking…all individualized to meet student needs 
- Bus Loop – Tremendous addition in student drop off/pick up efforts 


 

 Waiver Day – Gifted Professional Development as well as guest speaker focusing on Twice 
Exceptional Students. 


 

 MS Consulting – Mr. Janofa discussed a proposal for Pre-Bond Issue Assistance from MS 
Consultants, Inc. for board consideration in a potential levy in 2019. 


 

 2017 ODE Report Card – Building administrators will be giving presentations at the next 
regular Board of Education meeting. 


 

 POW Chair – Mr. Jeff Vrabel showed the Board what the POW Chair looks like and 
discussed recommendations as to where the chair should be placed. 


 

 

 

 

 

 


 

INFORMATION 

 

 Communication Committee of the Strategic Planning Group is meeting on Tuesday, 
September 18 at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria at Poland Seminary High School. 
 Poland Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence Banquet will be held at The 
Embassy, 5030 Youngstown-Poland Road., on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. 


 

 

At 7:55 p.m., Mr. Lavorini moved and Dr. Dinopoulos seconded with Mr. Riddle and Mrs. 
Zedaker voting aye to enter into Executive Session regarding updates on PEA negotiations. 
Absent: Mr. Shovlin. 

 

 

Reconvene and Adjournment 

 At 8:25 p.m., Mr. Lavorini moved and Mr. Riddle seconded with Dr. Dinopoulos and Mrs. 
Zedaker voting aye to reconvene and adjourn the meeting. Absent: Mr. Shovlin.
