Work Session Poland Board of Education held October 19, 2020 A Work Session of the Poland Board of Education was held on Monday, October 19, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. President, Mr. Riddle called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Pledge of Allegiance Members present for roll call and answering their names were Ms. Colucci, Dr. Dinopoulos, Mr. Polis, Mr. Riddle and Mr. Warren ACADEMICS - Mr. Janofa, Superintendent * National Merit Scholarship Ð Will J. Davies and Anthony F. Gallo of Poland Seminary High School have been named Commended Students in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. ? MAP Data from each building - Mr. Zura presented MAP Data Growth from each building in both Language Arts and Math vs Non-Covid Cohort. Data revealed growth at every grade level. COVID Reporting-Mr. Janofa, Superintendent ? Data from the remote students returning to in person learning Ð The district received 111 requests for students who were on remote learning in the 1st nine weeks to return to in person learning the 2nd nine weeks. Approximately 86% attending in person beginning 2nd nine weeks. FOOD SERVICE-Mrs. Roemer, Nutrition Group * Showed a brief video of the importance of the school nutrition program * All meals, both breakfast and lunch, are FREE throughout the entire 2020-2021 school year for all students age 18 and under. * Shared the importance of filling out free reduced application even if a family thinks they donÕt qualify because this information impacts Federal Dollars the district receives. * Students throughout the district will be receiving free treats on various days which qualify as a reimbursable breakfast. * Meals are being delivered to the students in their classrooms for both breakfast and lunch. * There are currently approximately 70 pickups which include both breakfast and lunches for seven days a week. * Any questions on how to obtain free meals, please contact Megan Roemer at mroemer@polandschools.org or by calling the school. DISCUSSION: Janet Muntean, Treasurer * Capital Project Fund Ð Mrs. Muntean reviewed draft Capital Project Resolutions for both future Turf Replacement and Track Resurfacing/Replacement. Both resolutions will be on the next regularly scheduled board agenda for approval. * Potential Van Purchase Ð Last year, a van was scheduled to be purchased; however, due to the GM shut down and then the COVID19 pandemic, the purchase was cancelled. The district may have the opportunity to purchase a new van this school year. Mrs. Muntean provided the specs and quote for the potential purchase. District vehicles including buses, vans and trucks are part of the district vehicle replacement plan as directed by the districtÕs Strategic Plan and Forging the Bulldog Future Plan. FACILITIES - Mr. Janofa, Superintendent/Mrs. Muntean, Treasurer * Forging Bulldog Future Plan Ð An updated, Forging the Bulldog Future Plan was shared and discussed. This document will continue to be updated as changes occur. - A discussion regarding the North Property took place. Mr. Riddle read a letter received from Ed Kempers, member of Western Reserve Joint Fire District. The Western Reserve Joint Fire District had previously expressed interest in the North Property. The letter explained they are currently collaborating with an outside source to make sure their needs are being met; therefore, they are not making any decisions until that report is received. - Auctioning the contents of North is one of the items to be completed as part of the Forging the Bulldog Future Plan document. Mr. Janofa explained that the contents of Dobbins and excess furniture and/or equipment which was removed from the buildings due to COVID-19 social distancing efforts are currently being stored at North. Due to the pandemic, postponing the auction of contents at this time is probably a good idea. * Permanent Improvement (PI) Fund expenditures Ð Fiscal 2020 and Fiscal 2021 capital project report was shared and discussed. The report detailed the District Projects which have been completed to date, as well as work in progress and those projects yet to start. * Write-up and Video regarding the tree removal at Dobbins Elementary Ð Mr. Janofa shared a video from TEMA Roofing showing the Dobbins Roof project from beginning to end which clearly visualizes the immediate need to remove the trees from around the Dobbins School. Mr. Janofa communicated to the Board that he has already begun the necessary steps to plant new trees on district property. The video of the Dobbins Roof Project can be found on the district website. At 7:16 p.m., Mr. Polis moved and Mr. Warren seconded with all members present signaling aye to enter into executive session to consider the appointment, employment, dismissal, discipline, promotion, demotion or compensation of a public employee or official; and conference with the BoardÕs attorney to discuss matters which are the subject of pending or imminent court action. Reconvene to Regular Session and Adjourn At 9:18 p.m., Mr. Polis moved and Ms. Colucci seconded with all members voting aye to reconvene the work session and adjourn the meeting. Motion passed 5-0.
