School Committee Policy

STUDENT DEMONSTRATIONS AND STRIKES - JJ

The Brockton School Committee has established the following policy regarding student disruptions, demonstrations and strikes.

It is the belief of this Committee that many of the problems that ultimately lead to a disruption can be prevented by adequate communications between the diverse groups that make up the school community.

To this end, school administrators should:

  1. Allow an "open door" policy in the school so that pupils feel assured they will be heard,
  2. Work closely with the student groups,
  3. Meet regularly with student representatives,
  4. Be aware of community situations and problems which may affect the school, and
  5. Work closely with parent groups.

If despite these provisions a disorder occurs, the school administrators should have a contingency plan to allow for the following:

  1. Notification can be made to selected staff and students to assume special duties.
  2. The trouble area can be contained and locked off.
  3. Notification can be made to the police if order cannot be restored using school department personnel.
  4. Cancellation of free periods for staff and evacuation of the building.
  5. The reporting of media personnel to the main office for clearance.

In any disruption or emergency, all staff members will take reasonable steps to protect the welfare of their students and each other with full assurance by the School Committee of such legal protection from personal liability as may be authorized under General Laws, Chapter 41, Section l00C.
