Dream Big Read

Recommended Reading for Students Entering Grades 1 & 2

Dear Family:

Reading is an important part of everyday life. Just because it is summer, students should not put their books away! Brockton Public Schools invite you and your family to participate in our Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme is “Dream Big, READ!”

The importance of summer reading cannot be overemphasized. Educational researchers note that some children’s reading levels dropped as much as two grades when students did not read regularly over the summer months. It is really simple: the more students read the better readers they become. Your support is a critical part of the Summer Reading Program.

Students entering grades 6, 7 and 8 are required to read at least one book from the Recommended Authors List, the Optional Titles List or students may also choose to read a book of their choice. As a parent or guardian, you may choose a book to read together.

Students will list all books they have read on the Reading Log and then complete an activity for ONE book from the Option Blocks. Extra forms will be available at all branches of the Brockton Public Library and on the Brockton Public Schools’ website: www.bpsma.org

In September, students will have conversations centering on their summer reading. Students will pass in Reading Logs and Option Block activities and participate in school celebrations planned at each building.

Sincerely,

Kathleen A. Smith, JD

Superintendent of Schools
